Sender: owner-leap@brookes.ac.uk Precedence: bulk Reply-To: leap@brookes.ac.uk Dear All, Firstly, I'm back from my holiday, and will be focusing (when the weather isn't too nice!) on getting the 'C' port sorted out. The big news is that Oxford Brookes University have set up a mailing list on their Majordomo server. This means you can all communicate with one another, discuss issues, raise questions, and so on, regarding LEAP, without my intervention! Many thanks primarily to Simon Hogg of Brookes University, and Peter Ellis, of the school of computing and mathematical sciences, for arranging this. In order to SUBSCRIBE to the leap mailing list, send an e-mail to the following e-mail address: majordomo@brookes.ac.uk Include the following line IN THE BODY - NOT THE SUBJECT (Subject is ignored!): subscribe leap [address] - This command subscribes the user to the named list. Unless the user includes the optional address, Majordomo will use the email address in the mail message header ("Reply-to:", if any, otherwise "From:") to send mail to the user. (You should use this if your mailer is a bit whacky, or are subscribing to another address). You can also send other commands, a full help file can be retrieved with the command (on a seperate line) "help", but I understand this is sent automatically. To SEND mail to the list, send e-mail to: leap@brookes.ac.uk - And this will be sent to all members of the list. As many of you are probably on holiday/vacation right now, I will try to get you added. Nonetheless, subscribe yourself manually if you can! I was getting fed up with the old structure, which was all on one page, very inflexible, and not particularly accomodating to either interested browsers, LEAP users, or random hitters. So, the new structure is gradually taking shape. There is a link to the pages on the old pages (which are still the main set), or you can get there directly via the following URL: http://www.brookes.ac.uk/~e0190404/new_page/leap.htm If you have any comments on this page, I'd be interested to hear them. Send them to me directly (e-mail address is at the base of this mail), or via this mailing list: leap@brookes.ac.uk Regards, Richard. -- Richard Leyton, AMS Management Systems Deutschland GmbH mailto:richard_leyton@mail.amsinc.com (LEAP Home page): http://www.brookes.ac.uk/~e0190404/leap.html Opinions are my own, and not representative of AMS. >From leap-owner Wed Aug 28 10:54:46 1996 Received: by brookes.ac.uk (8.7.3/SMI-SVR4) id KAA16009; Wed, 28 Aug 1996 10:54:45 +0100 (BST) Message-Id: <32241707.2EBE@mail.amsinc.com> Date: Wed, 28 Aug 1996 11:53:12 +0200 From: Richard Leyton Organization: AMS Management Systems Deutschland GmbH X-Mailer: Mozilla 3.0 (X11; I; SunOS 5.4 sun4m) Mime-Version: 1.0 To: leap@brookes.ac.uk Cc: rleyton@mail.amsinc.com, richard_leyton@mail.amsinc.com Subject: leap list: Status of C/Unix Port Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-leap@brookes.ac.uk Precedence: bulk Reply-To: leap@brookes.ac.uk Dear all, There has been very little progress over the last month or two regarding the port of LEAP to C, and thereby to Un*x. This has been due to relentless work pressures, holiday, and technical problems. Unfortunately, there is little that can be done about the first item. I refuse point blank to work during holidays (I trust you don't blame me for that!), and technical problems with my Linux setup have meant that I've simply not been able to work on the system. Anyway, you'll (hopefully) be pleased to hear that the technical problems have now been resolved, and I'm not back into the swing of things, and working on getting the remainder of the relational operators implemented. Currently, the C system has been compiled on the following environments: Linux Solaris NeXT SunOS Ultrix Windows 95 With the exception of Windows 95, which used the Borland C++ 4.5 compiler, all the compilations were done using the GNU C compiler. This compiler is readily available for many platforms, free of charge, under the GNU General public license, the license by which LEAP is now distributed. There are various problems on the different architectures. I failed to get LEAP to run on NeXt and Ultrix, because of POSIX/BSD file handler differences, but as time progresses, I will solve these problems. My plan is to do the following: - C version - Comment: - 0.6 - Complete the implementation of the base operators (0.6) - 0.7 - Tidy up memory leaks and remaining functional gaps. Some 0.10 specifics, such as Mutliple databases and data dictionary. - 0.8 - Fix majority of "TO-DO's". These litter the code, and indicate areas that could be implemented better, more efficently, or elagantly. - 0.9 - Testing and fixing. After this, the DOS source files and relations should work seemlessly. (currently there are some problems) Beta 0.11.1 - "Official release", start getting everything ported to other environments. Changes will be necessary for different implementations and flavours. (C version has two version numbers: 0.11 (next version of LEAP), and internal version (reflecting status of port). I'm at 0.6 at the moment. I will be adding links to the new home page that will allow you, and others, to easily get hold of the C source code, as well as the Pascal source, and "official" distributions. I might have to do some pursuading at Brookes University to get a bit more disk space quota to provide this away from ftp sites. Anyway, to summise, I hope to get the relational operators finished this weekend. That will be the point where others can kick in and start playing. The remaining versions are necessary to get the 'C' version up to, and beyond, the Pascal version, which won't need to be maintained. Here, then, is a summary: - Replace parser with LEX/YACC offering. - Multiple users - Remote connections (via telnet) - Support for a subset of SQL - A better file storage structure - Support for other file structure formats (DBase has been suggested) - Indicies proper. - Query optimiser - Access plan analyser - "Proper" data dictionary(ies) - Java database connectivity. Not sure about the specifics of this, but boils down to allowing access to LEAP via WWW for on-line tutorials. - Relational calculus support - Referential integrity, part 2 of the relational model. The list goes on. I'd like to throw this subject very much to everybody on this list, to ask what people would prefer, would like to see, would like to perhaps consider implementing. E-mail the list directly, or send the suggestions to me via my e-mail address at the base of the mail.
