MIME-Version: 1.0 X-Mailer: Turnpike Version 3.03a Sender: owner-leap@brookes.ac.uk Precedence: bulk Reply-To: leap@brookes.ac.uk Dear all, Just a quick message to let you know that I have finally managed to produce a 32bit version of LEAP. This has all been possible through recently announced GNU-Win32 suite (see comp.os.linux.announce), or: http://www.cygnus.com/misc/gnu-win32 The end product of this project is the complete GNU development environment on Windows 95/NT. Free under the GPL. If you are interested in testing the 32bit LEAP compiled version, for Windows 95/NT, please drop me a line, and I can e-mail you a copy of the binary/dll's necessary. I'd like to do this to check that the software works in another environment before I "officially" release it. So what's different from the 16bit version? - Windows 95/NT Console binary (Still no scroll bars, but you *can* cut and paste!). To non-Windows people, it *looks* like a DOS program... - 32 bit - So is cleaner in 95/NT, and doesn't crash as often. - Uses a freely available compiler, and (dig this) no code modifications are necessary. - Faster (In my brief tests) - Uses long directory/file names Ok, now a plug (out of genuine appreciation). If you like Unix, but are using Windows, and do want to use some of the Unix utilities you like, then take a look at this gnu-win32 project. I can honestly say I was VERY surprised to see this project, and to see it in such an advanced state. It's (of course) under the GNU GPL. The only downer is the development environment is 15Mb in size, and costs an hour long phone call to download... :( The utility environment (containing awk, sed, bash, etc.) is smaller... I literally downloaded the development archive, followed a few simple instructions pertaining to environment variables, created a Makefile (my LEAP configure script doesn't quite work yet), and ran Make. LEAP compiled first time. Amazing. Ok, enough's enough. Let me know if you want to try it out, and I'll drop you the binaries. Let me know if you'd prefer .zip, or .gz Regards, Richard. -- Richard Leyton mailto: rleyton@acm.org >From leap-owner Tue Jun 17 22:50:20 1997 Received: by brookes.ac.uk (8.8.4/SMI-SVR4) id WAA12574; Tue, 17 Jun 1997 22:49:45 +0100 (BST) Message-ID: Date: Tue, 17 Jun 1997 22:02:21 +0100 To: leap@brookes.ac.uk From: Richard Leyton Subject: Re: leap list: LEAP 32 bit testers wanted! The preliminary release of 1.0 is now available at: http://www.dogbert.demon.co.uk/leap.html on the download page. It is 416kb in size. It contains a compiled binary (Fully optimised for performance), and the cygwin.dll - Which should be everything you need to run it. It is distributed as a compressed (gzipped) tar file. It is NOT distributed as .ZIP file for the simple reason that .ZIP files do not contain Windows 95 long file names, and THIS version of LEAP supports long file names! If you're having trouble, get a copy of WinZip, which can handle .gz and .tar files. Or download the GNU-Win32 utility distribution for a freely available copy of gzip and tar that runs on Windows 95/NT. This distribution of LEAP does, of course, contain full source. If you don't want the binary, just get the normal distribution. For more info on the GNU-Win32 project, see: http://www.cygnus.com/misc/gnu-win32 Please let me know how you get on, whether it works perfectly or not. I need to know either way before I release it to the world... Regards, Richard. -- Richard Leyton mailto: rleyton@acm.org My opinions are mine, and nobody else's.
